Re: “Letter to the Editor” (Jerry Ortiz Y Pino, February 5-11)

In defending the remarks of Council President Benton regarding Israel’s Operation Cast Lead – remarks which Councilman Benton has since apologized for — Mr. Ortiz y Pino unfortunately reiterates a host of disproven accusations against the Jewish State.

First, the genocide charge against Israel is particularly odious: if Israel truly has such designs, how has the population of the West Bank and Gaza managed to grow from 950,000 in 1967 to approximately 2.6 million today? Contra Mr. Ortiz y Pino it is totally appropriate to make a big deal out of a false accusation of Genocide.  That term — coined by a Jewish survivor of Nazism — has no equivalence to Israel’s policies, which two years ago saw Israel unconditionally withdraw from Gaza to allow the Palestinian population self-determination.

Sadly, instead of the lives of Gazans improving, the region became a terror base for Hamas. Behind the tragedy of dead children are Hamas terrorists who choose to launch mortars from schoolyards, and hide rockets in apartment buildings, callously imperiling their own people.

As for Mr. Ortiz y Pino’s Apartheid charge, it’s worth noting that despite the mendacious title of his 2006 book, former President Carter actually never claimed that Israel engages in the racist policies of pre-1994 South Africa, which legislated a vision of racial superiority completely absent from Israeli governmental rule. “Apartheid” and “Genocide” are no less offensive than “Ethnic Cleansing” when misapplied to the most religiously and ethnically diverse nation in the Middle East.

While reciting a litany of pejoratives to condemn Israel, Mr. Ortiz y Pino manages to overlook the basic motivation behind Israel’s recent military actions: to halt the thousands of rockets that have been fired from Gaza into Israel, with more than 500,000 Israelis in the direct range of these weapons. Thus, Mr. Ortiz y Pino ignores the most truthful phrase to convey Israeli policy: a country’s simple right to self-defense.

Sincerely,

Robert Efroymson

The Israel Alliance is a chartered student’s club at the University of New Mexico advocating for the State of Israel.  The club is sponsoring – during the week of March 9 to March 13 (Monday through Friday) – a table adjacent to the Student Union Building (SUB) atrium. Lynn Provencio has previously informed you that during the week we will be supporting Israel, while fact-checking and correcting an exhibit in the SUB atrium called “Jerusalem Dispossessed Photographic Exhibit.” This exhibit is mounted by the recently formed group “Another Jewish Voice.” They are also sponsoring two films at the Guild this weekend – “The Iron Wall” and “Jerusalem: The East Side Story.” The films are highly critical of Israel for, respectively, building a fence to protect its citizens from homicide bombers, and championing a united Jerusalem – residence for Jews, Christians, and Moslems.

The Israel Alliance table will be staffed from 9 AM to 4 PM each day. It will be bordered by large American and Israeli flags mounted on eight foot poles. Four pro-Israel posters (please see Attachments) will be affixed to easels. At the table there will be a variety of fliers and articles making the case for Israel in an historically accurate way. Please stop by or, better yet, volunteer to staff the table for a hour or two. Do so by replying to sender or emailing our new club email address: alliance@unm.edu.

Thank you.

A Statement from the President and Executive Director of the Jewish Federation of New Mexico

By Sam Sokolove on Wednesday, March 4th, 2009 at 11:19 am
Categories: Israel

The Jewish community – especially the New Mexico Jewish Community – is no monolith. There are opinions galore amongst us, and the New Mexico Jewish Link, the Jewish Federation of New Mexico’s monthly publication, has and will continue to serve as a forum for these differing views.

Even those we disagree with, sometimes vehemently.

As for the Federation, however, let us be clear about one thing: we stand, in unwavering solidarity, with the people of Israel during Operation Cast Lead against the Hamas terrorist group in the Gaza Strip.

Like many communities across North America, the Jewish Federation recently convened a rally in Albuquerque to demonstrate that our community, as embodied in the UJC/Federation system, stands as One People, with One Destiny with our brothers and sisters in Israel and around the world.

Israeli Prime Minister Olmert sums up the vital importance of our support, saying, “It is a source of profound strength for the citizens of Israel to know that our Jewish family around the world continues to stand alongside us in our quest to bring peace and security to our homeland.”

Since its inception, Israel has faced a series of profound challenges.  Today, it is grappling with an adversary who bases its political strategies on the principle of terrorizing civilian populations.  Two years ago, Israel evacuated the Gaza Strip without conditions and without a peace treaty.  The land was left to its Palestinian inhabitants, for their benefit.  It was hoped that this action could help improve relations.  Instead of the situation getting better, Gaza became a refuge for terrorists.  Hamas became a democratically elected government, and developed close ties with Iran. Rockets began to fall upon the Land of Israel with ever-increasing intensity.

The civilian population in the Western Negev, Sderot, and the area surrounding Gaza has experienced daily attacks for eight years.  I don’t think that we can quite imagine what this situation might be like.  Well, if we were to suspend reality for a moment, (G-d forbid) imagine Las Cruces and El Paso being hit by rockets originating from Juarez.  How many rockets would it take for the US Government to retaliate?  One, two, perhaps three?  Now imagine, thousands upon thousands of rockets hitting Las Cruces and El Paso. How long would it take for the US Government under any administration to retaliate?  One week, one month, one year?  What about two years?  Not likely.

This past summer, Barack Obama visited Sderot as a presidential candidate.  During his trip, he said: “I don’t think any country would find it acceptable to have missiles raining down on the heads of their citizens. The first job of any nation state is to protect its citizens. And so I can assure you that if — I don’t even care if I was a politician — if somebody was sending rockets into my house where my two daughters sleep at night, I’m going to do everything in my power to stop that. And I would expect Israelis to do the same thing.”

Since Israel evacuated from the Gaza Strip in the summer of 2005, approximately 6,300 rockets have been fired into Israel.  Hundreds have fallen in recent days.   Between 500 and 700,000 Israelis are in the direct range of these rocket attacks.  That’s the same number of people who live in the Albuquerque metropolitan area.

Last month, Israeli Ambassador to the US, Sallai Merigdor said that: “Israel had no other choice then to take action to defend itself.”

Thus, we gather to stand in solidarity with the State of Israel and with its people.

Thus, we renounce the weeks of sustained, daily attacks.

Thus, we show our support during this uncertain, but very critical, time.

Thus, we say that Israel, like any other nation on earth, has a right to protect its citizens from a constant barrage of rocket fire and mortar shell attacks.

But also we pray for peace, for Israel and for its neighbors.

May the day come when nation shall no longer lift up sword against nation, neither shall we learn war any more.

Hamas is a Bad Idea to Support

By Sam Sokolove on Wednesday, March 4th, 2009 at 11:14 am

By Robert Efroymson, President, Jewish Federation of New Mexico

When State Representative and attorney Antonio Maestas spoke at a January 10 anti-Israel rally in Albuquerque’s Old Town, he blasted the Albuquerque Journal for supporting Israel’s campaign against Hamas with a most troubling declaration. “What do you mean by ‘crushing Hamas?’ he asked the approving crowd. “You cannot crush an idea whose time has come!”

In this curious sentence, Representative Maestas gave approval to one of the most horrendous “ideas” propagated since the ideology of the Third Reich.  In short, while Representative Maestas lauds the ideals of freedom and liberation for the Palestinian people, he ironically voices support for one of the most repressive and violent regimes in the Middle East, both to Jews and Muslims alike.

Hamas, translated as ‘zeal’, is a Sunni Islamic organization, established from cells of the Muslim Brotherhood organization.  Hamas believes in an Islamic theocracy over all the territory of the land of Israel, “from the Mediterranean Sea to the Jordan River”.

Hamas’ modus operandi is suicide bombings and other acts of violence directed at innocent Israeli civilians. Among the horrific acts committed by this group include the June 1, 2001, suicide bombing of a discotheque near Tel Aviv’s Dolphinarium where 21 young people were killed and 120 wounded; the March 27, 2002, suicide bombing of the dining room of the Park Hotel in the coastal city of Netanya. 30 people were killed and 140 injured, in the midst of their Passover holiday ‘Seder’ dinner, and the June 18, 2002, suicide bombing of a commuter bus in Jerusalem, with many children on their way to school, in which 19 people were killed and 74 injured.

The Hamas terrorists who perpetrate these atrocities are celebrated as heroes, holy martyrs, within their communities – the larger the number of victims, the greater the celebration.

The Hamas Charter, a defiant mixture of Islamic extremism and vile anti-Semitism, implores its followers to serve under the “banner of jihad.” “This requires the propagation of Islamic consciousness among the masses…the indoctrination campaign must involve (legal scholars), educators, teachers and information and media experts, as well as all intellectuals.”

 Other Charter positions:

·         “Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam will obliterate it, just as it obliterated others before it.”

·         “There is no solution for the Palestinian question except through Jihad. Initiatives, proposals and international conferences are all a waste of time and vain endeavors.”

·         “After Palestine, the Zionists aspire to expand from the Nile to the Euphrates. When they will have digested the region they overtook, they will aspire to further expansion, and so on. Their plan is embodied in the “Protocols of the Elders of Zion”, and their present conduct is the best proof of what we are saying.”

Locally, we depend on our elected officials to focus on issues that impact our lives as citizens, and we expect that that they will be educated and well-informed in stating their positions. While Rep. Maetsats was clear to differentiate between his, “Jewish brothers and sisters” and the governmental policies of Israel, his comments alienated a wide swath of his constituents, and trouble New Mexico’s Jewish community.

Since Israel began Operation Cast Iron last month, Jews in New Mexico have mourned the tragic loss of civilian Palestinians, many of whom were women and children, and fathom. But like our brethren in Israel, we recognize that Israel has a right and responsibility to defend its citizens against

Terrorism must be defeated if Israel and the Palestinians are ever to have an opportunity to resolve their differences peacefully around a negotiating table.  We hope that Israel’s action will diminish Hamas’ terrorist capability and ultimately enhance the prospects for peace.
