ABQ Start-up Wins Fellowship to Israel
Albuquerque, NM — This week, the New Mexico-Israel Business Exchange (NMIBE) sent Albuquerque entrepreneur, Jose Luis Cruz-Campa, Ph.D., to Israel for International Entrepreneur Week at the University of Tel Aviv. Dr. Cruz-Campa is the co-founder and vice-president of mPower Technology Inc (www.mpower.technology), an Albuquerque hi-tech start-up that is in the process of commercializing intellectual property out of Sandia National Laboratories.
mPower’s revolutionary solar technology was developed with an investment of over $19 million over nine years at Sandia and includes over 50 patent applications. The company intends to manufacture a solar power solution that could have a significant impact in a multitude of industry sectors, worldwide.
In July of this year, Dr. Cruz-Campa was selected as the inaugural recipient of the NMIBE International Entrepreneur Fellowship Program, which sends New Mexico entrepreneurs on an expense-paid fellowship to Tel Aviv University’s Star Tau Entrepreneurship Center. This fellowship occurs during the country’s Annual DLD Tel Aviv Digital Conference, which showcases the “Start-up Nation’s” trends and entrepreneurship leaders in S.T.E.M., renewable energy, and bio-tech.
“Our goal with this new fellowship is to be the bridge between Israel, the “Start-up Nation,” and New Mexico’s world-class technologies and entrepreneurs,” said NMIBE President Robert Efroymson.
From September 6-10, Dr. Cruz-Campa and other entrepreneurs from around the world will visit some of Israel’s leading start-ups and incubators such as Wix and the Microsoft Ventures Accelerator. Dr. Cruz-Campa will also participate in the 15th annual DLD Tel Aviv Digital Conference, which attracts global tech leaders to discuss trends and markets in the industry.
“We are very excited to bring this technology to market with the support of great local programs offered through partners like the NMIBE,” added Dr. Cruz-Campa. “It is an honor to be the first entrepreneurs selected and we hope that this fellowship will continue expanding opportunities for many more New Mexican entrepreneurs in the years to come.”
The NMIBE is also working with the Albuquerque-Bernalillo County Trade Alliance and the State of New Mexico’s Middle East Trade Office to supplement Dr. Cruz-Campa’s agenda with additional business meetings in hopes that it might lead to potential Israeli investors and partners.
